Why Burnaby is a Great Place to Study Performing Arts
At just over 200,000 people, Burnaby is large enough to support a strong community of performing arts, but its location ten miles from Vancouver (Canada's third city) has to some extent reduced the need for Burnaby to develop the arts quite as much as a more independent city of this size might. So Vancouver covers all the major performing arts bases with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, British Columbia Ballet, Vancouver Opera, and Vancouver Playhouse and Burnaby contrasts these powerhouses with several smaller community organizations of its own. Collectively, the Greater Vancouver Regional District, which includes Burnaby, Vancouver and Surrey, enjoys an international reputation and is well-known for its independent and alternative arts organizations, particularly in the theatre sector.
